Notes: Craig Colony was founded in Groveland, Livingston Co., NY in 1896 as an institution for people with epilepsy. In 1968, it was phased out of existence as a specialized institution and was used as a facility for people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities. In 1974, it was renamed and operated under the auspices of the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities. The facility was closed in 1988. There are over 1,500 simple gravestones in the cemetery (like Clara's) - most marked only with a name. A handful of markers have one or more dates. In comparing names with census records, it appears most of the burials were patients. The cemetery is also known as the Craig State School Cemetery.
