|
It is not known exactly
what year Henry immigrated to America. In the 1900
Census, he states he immigrated in 1850; in the 1910
Census, his year of immigration is listed as 1849.
He first settled in Philadelphia, PA, where he
married Mary Elizabeth [Unknown] and worked as a
confectioner. By 1870, the family had moved to
Buffalo, Erie Co., NY. It appears Henry fathered a
child by his 2nd wife while still in PA, and a 2nd
child of his was born to her in Buffalo in 1869,
though Henry appears in the 1870 census with his 1st
wife and their children. Apparently, Henry and Mary
parted ways, as he appears in the 1880 census living
with his 2nd wife and 2nd family of children, while
Mary appears living with her children. In addition,
Henry seems to have changed the spelling of his
last name to REIPE during this time.
His
naturalization record in Philadelphia (May 1, 1856)
has his name spelled RIEPE, while all census from
1880 on and SS information for his children and
grandchildren from his 2nd marriage, have it spelled REIPE. His son, Frank, by his 1st marriage, also
worked as confectioner in Buffalo. Perhaps, Henry
changed the spelling to REIPE to differentiate his
business from his son's. Or was there a major
"falling out" in the family and the name was changed
to disassociate himself from his 1st family??
Mysteries abound. Any one with info, please let me
know. |

her brother convinced the family that Hannah would
do well to come to America. She first settled in
Quincy with her brother, and was married in Quincy
in 1857 to PETER HENRY WEHMEYER. Hannah and her
husband remained in Quincy until the end of the
Civil War, when they purchased a farm in Marion Co.,
MO, where they then moved. Ironically,
Hannah's brother proved right by saying she would do
better here in America . . . Hannah ended up living a VERY
long life! She is one of our
"Notable Riepes".
